One small step
title design
One Small Step is an imaginative documentary with the premise of exploring the politics, science and heroism of the Apollo missions.
The Apollo 11 mission wasn’t an easy one. It took courage, ingenuity and willpower from not only the astronauts, but hundreds of people back on Earth to pull off such a monumental task.
Set with a goal of designing styleframes for the title sequence proved to be just as large of a task, which was both thrilling and challenging.
Narrative Approach
The story structure for the title frames was to approach it in a chronological order, from launch to landing on the moon. It was important to show the journey from earth to the moon because it let’s the audience see the vast emptiness of space to convey just how small and alone we really are.
The idea of using grain in the frames helps maintain the feeling of vintage footage that would be present in the quality of film from that era today. The decision to bring out blues and black negative space was used to sell the idea of loneliness and isolation.
Typography & layout
The typography used was Futura. It’s a clean, simple, and modern font that conveys a forward-looking idea. When researching for a font it was important to use one that reflected the same ideology that was happening during this time period. Futura would also end up being the font NASA used on the plaque that Apollo 11 left on the moon.
